DC and Marvel heroes like, to name a few, all have dark sides. Infact, it is a tragic incident that makes them superheroes in the first place!
This case is best illustrated with The Dark Knight. It is the murderof his parents and the subsequent sense of loss and retribution that gives thischaracter an intense emotional depth. In other words, how one badday can shape the events of ones life. Created in the McCarthy eraof Cold War paranoia, The Incredible Hulk is borne out of a nuclear radiationaccident.
Mild-mannered scientist Bruce Banner is transformed intothe Hulk. Capable of immense feats of strength, the Hulks trigger isanger and he is almost a self-parody of the Alpha Male. Banner sees himself afreak, and wants to be a normal person, which is why in every Hulkmovie ever made, hes always trying to find some serum to permanentlydestroy the Hulk.
On a more magical note is DrStrange. An accomplished but arrogant surgeon by profession, Stephen Vincentmeets with an automobile accident and suffers profound neurological damage tohis hands. After which he is unable to make the precise, fine movementsnecessary for surgery. He falls on destitute times, ends up in a Himalayan townas a vagrant, and learns the black arts. Yet, he uses his powers for good. Yet,the past for him is irretrievable.
But few stories are as scary asThe Crow. This character has been blighted even in real life. The story revolvesaround an unfortunate young man named Eric and his fiance, Shelly, whoare assaulted by a gang of street thugs. Eric is shot in the head and isparalysed, and can only watch as Shelly is savagely raped until she dies at thescene. He later dies at the operating table, and his soul is later resurrectedby a raven. The resultant superpowers he gets helps him go about his task ofcleaning up societys flotsam. In a freak accident, Brandon Lee (BruceLees son) died on the sets of The Crow film when a stage gun wasaccidentally loaded with live ammunition.
In keeping with the urbanvigilante theme is The Punisher. Driven by the deaths of his family, who werekilled by the mob when they witnessed a gangland execution in New YorkCitys Central Park, The Punisher wages a one-man war on the mob and allcriminals in general by using all manner of weaponry.
This dualitysimply makes the characters more believable to people, for like night and day, good cannot exist without evil and vice versa.
